Library Without Walls was created to provide access to materials relating to dance and performance outside the walls of the New York Public Library, which contains the world's largest dance collection. As Library Without Walls continues to develop, materials from other important primary source collections will be integrated into the site.
Library Without Walls will eventually host many different historical and contemporary projects. The first are:
George Washington Dances (Pilot Project): George Washington Dances deals with dance in Colonial America 1725-1825. Washington is the centerpiece -- the first American president was an avid dancer who used dance for personal and political purposes.
Urban Bush Women (Upcoming): Urban Bush Women, an all-female African American dance company founded and directed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, has created feminist postmodern, yet widely appealing, dance works since 1984. At the center of the work is community involvement.
